Task 1

Reading

Air Transportation

The aeroplane changed many of the world’s habits within a few years. Planes could reach the most isolated places on the globe. As travel time between continents grew shorter, round the world travel increased. Foods and medicine could be shipped across great distances on cargo planes. Mails were speeded up.

The helicopter, another valuable vehicle in air transport, has been in use for freight, mail, industrial purposes, and passenger service since 1947. The helicopter is able to rise straight up off the ground.

In air transportation, the trend is toward higher speeds and large aeroplanes. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet can carry about 375 passengers and 20 tons of freight at nearly 600 miles per hour. The SST (Supersonic Transport) is designed to fly at speeds over 1.300 miles per hour.
