Grammar

Present Continuous ( Progressive)


We use continuous tense only for actions and happenings (they are eating, it is raining) Some Verbs (for example, know and like) are not action verbs. You can not say I am knowing or they are liking, but you can only say I know, They like….

The following verbs are not normally used in continuous tense

Like love hate want need prefer

Know realize suppose mean understand believe remember

Belong contain consist depend seem

Example :

v I’m hungry, I want something to eat

v Do not understand what I mean?

v Ann doesn’t seem very happy at the moment

v She is waiting her friend

v They are watching TV

Traditional Costumes


There are various kinds of traditional costumes in Indonesia. Men wear “sarong” and shirts with long sleeves. Women wear “kain” and long or short “kebaya” and some ornaments. There are also various kinds of kebaya worn by women and girls. The cultural diversity has resulted in different style of dress on the various islands.

In west Java, Central Java and East Java women wear kain batik (cloth with batik designs) and kebaya. But the patterns and styles of the kebaya are slightly different. The kinds of material used are also defferent.

Traditional dresses worn by Indonesians are beautiful and charming, they are fancy dresses. Some of the traditional dresses are locally made, they are usually worn by young men and young girls on special events, such as wedding party and graduation day. Western style dresses are usually worn for daily activities.

Reading

Air Transportation

The aeroplane changed many of the world’s habits within a few years. Planes could reach the most isolated places on the globe. As travel time between continents grew shorter, round the world travel increased. Foods and medicine could be shipped across great distances on cargo planes. Mails were speeded up.

The helicopter, another valuable vehicle in air transport, has been in use for freight, mail, industrial purposes, and passenger service since 1947. The helicopter is able to rise straight up off the ground.

In air transportation, the trend is toward higher speeds and large aeroplanes. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet can carry about 375 passengers and 20 tons of freight at nearly 600 miles per hour. The SST (Supersonic Transport) is designed to fly at speeds over 1.300 miles per hour. But the United Stated cancelled or dropped plants to build an SST because of the expense, and possible environmental problems.

GRAMMAR

Superlative and Comparative

Example:

Comparative

We use –er for short word one syllable (cheap – cheaper, fast-faster)

We also use –er for two syllable words (easy- easier, pretty – prettier. etc)

- This hotel is cheaper than all other in town.

- Let’s go buy car. It’s cheaper.

Superlative

We use -est for short words and most…….. For longer words

- This hotel is the cheapest in the town.

- What is the longest river in the world?
